THE BROWN BIBLE

Brown Spirits have been with us since at least 500AD, but most of us don’t know much about them – other than that they’re delicious and we love them. At the Handsome Hog, we’ve compiled the “brown spirit knowledge” that we’ve picked up along the way to give you this – The Brown Bible – your personal guide to all things whisk(e)y.

Bourbon? Whiskey? Whisky? What’s the damn difference?!
Rules are everywhere, and brown spirits are no exception.

Made from fermented grain mash: barley, corn, rye, wheat
or malted grain.

Must be aged in a charred oak barrel.

May not be distilled greater than 160 proof (80% ABV)

May not be barreled greater than 125 proof (62.5% ABV)

Must be bottled at 80 proof or greater.

Must be a product of U.S.A.

May not have any added flavoring or coloring.

Must consists at least 51% corn. Most Kentucky distillers use 60% -70%.

Must be aged in a new charred white oak barrel.

Many cite the brown spirit’s origin in Bourbon County, KY as its namesake, but the true origin of the name comes from early settlers’ proclivity for using French place names as a means of gratitude towards the country after their support in the American Revolution.

Between 2% and 4% of the world’s whiskey evaporates each year. This is what they call “The Angel’s Share.” That’s why old whiskey is so expensive and why angels are always so drunk.
